The main aim of our sixth form is to prepare students for A-level examinations and university entrance in a purposeful and friendly environment. We pride ourselves in providing a high quality, academic education, giving students individual support and guidance to fulfil their potential and achieve their goals.
Current students and their parents will be aware of the high standard of academic education we can offer, but each year we are also pleased to welcome a number of new students. We believe these achievements are the result of our rigorous academic ethos combined with warm relationships between students, staff and parents. Our teaching groups are small, which means that highly-qualified and experienced teachers can cater for the needs of individual students. We offer the encouragement, motivation and the personal support which we know is required to realise a student’s full potential.
A levels are available in the following subjects: English Literature, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Classical Civilisation, History, Government and Politics, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Geology, Economics, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Art and Music.
The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is also popular with both existing and new students in the Lower Sixth.
In the Sixth Form, students will be expected to take on more responsibility for their own learning. All students will have supervised private study time and individual tutorials, to encourage them to build on the knowledge and skills which have developed in lessons. There is also access to the school’s computer facilities and a well-stocked library.
In addition to the preparation for A level examinations, students are guided through the choices available when they leave Twycross; for most of our students this will involve applying to university. During the spring term, students in the Lower Sixth use the Centigrade Scheme to produce an individual profile showing interests, skills and aptitudes. This information will be used to inform discussions with staff on possible university course choices and career paths.
We also provide a Higher Education evening for our students. This covers all aspects of the UCAS application process including ideas on where to study, what to study, how to apply and how to find our more. We also discuss apprenticeships and the world of work during this evening. The school has a wide selection of resources providing information on university courses, apprenticeships and careers. We also arrange for experienced people to meet students to discuss careers, gap year options and spending a year in industry. Many of our former students return to share their experiences too.
Apart from academic work, students are encouraged to play a full part in the life of Twycross House and to act as role-models for the younger pupils. Many sixth formers participate in the school’s mentoring scheme working with individuals and small groups and help to organise and participate in sporting, musical, dramatic and social activities. Our lower sixth students are also expected to complete one hour of school service a week. This could be volunteering to help with lower school sport, mentoring students in a particular subject, helping out in lessons or with literacy skills.
The school has a purpose built common room where students from the lower and upper sixth can relax and mix socially. Social activities in the sixth form include a team building activity weekend, trips to the theatre concerts and exhibitions, a ski trip to Italy and a summer trip to Greece or Crete. Study visits have also taken place to Spain and France. Students are encouraged to continue to play sports; badminton, basketball, football, netball, and ultimate frisbee are all available. A number of students have gone on to play at club and county levels and some have even represented Great Britain.
The school has an excellent record in public speaking competitions and there are frequent opportunities for members of the sixth form to assist in plays and concerts as performers and technical assistants.
Students in the sixth form have formed close relationships with many different charitable organisations and have raised substantial sums of money for a range of charities, including international, national and local organisations.
Students are normally expected to gain at least six GCSEs at grade 6 or above. We prefer students to have achieved 7,8 or 9 in the subjects to be studied at A level.
Students study three full A levels during the Lower and Upper Sixth. Some students on discussion with staff, may be able to study a fourth subject.
