Biology field trip 2018

Ecology at its best! After braving the gale-force winds and rain last year we were not expecting the glorious sunshine we found when we arrived in Betws-y-coed. We had three beautiful days in which to carry out our ecological sampling to fulfil the A level required practical on ‘Measuring distribution of species’.

Day one involved getting wet! Students had to sample three different sites in the river to compare the diversity of each one, then decide what abiotic and biotic factors could cause these differences.

The second day looked at coastal ecology, with students finding out how distribution is affected the further away from the sea you got.

The final day we looked at succession in sand dunes. Students had to record data to show evidence of succession and how the distribution of plants changed.

Alongside all this hard work we did find time for a little bit of fun. We all braved the three line zip wire over Blaenau Ffestiniog slate mines and also explored inside the slate caverns by having fun in an underground trampoline park. All in all, this was a very successful trip. Here’s to next year.
