Twycross House School Junior Cross Country Report

This term the U9’s competed in their first ever-competitive cross-country race at The Pingles in Nuneaton.  Another first was the fact that the teams had two sets of twins competing for Twycross, Lauren and James Garland and Jessica and Oliver Salt. The girls team did exceptionally well securing first place overall with Isabella White finishing in 1st position, Jessica Salt 3rd, Lauren Garland 6th, Emily Carley 10th, Ellen Simmons 11th and Lily James 16th. The boys made it into fourth position with Henry Blunt making it into the top ten in 8th position.

The NPSSA third race of the season also took place at The Pingles for the U11’s. Alex Wylie made it a hat trick of first places and James Callaghan improved on his previous positions moving up into 4th place. William Simmons came home in 8th position and Benjamin McLean on his first outing also made the top ten in 9th position. The success of the girls’ team meant that not only Alex, but the whole team of Olivia Cox, Eileen Nistelberger, Sophia Brogan, Amelia Brown and Tayla Forman all qualified to represent the Nuneaton area in the next race. Having finished first in all three girls’ races the girls also lifted the trophy gaining first position overall.  The boys gained two thirds and a second and also finished in first position overall.

Twycross hosted the next leg of the competition the inter-district race between the North Warwickshire, Bedworth and Nuneaton areas. All of the girls’ team qualified for this race alongside William Simmons, Benjamin McLean, James Callaghan and Harry Saganee. As soon as the cows exited the field to be milked Mr G Assinder and Mr Finley were able to finish setting out the course. The course was very wet and heavy for the 82 boys and 84 girls who competed. Thanks must go to Emily Negus and Ethan Tebbutt for running as both the hare and the tortoise for both races and the staff who set out the course.

The course was a tough long one and Alex Wylie came home in second position about three metres behind the number one. Other top twenty finishes also went to Amelia Brown 10th, Sophia Brogan 17th and James Callaghan 20th. Along with William Simmons and Ben McLean these children all secured a place in the Northern Area Trials over at St Francis School in Bedworth.

After the gruelling Twycross race this course was like a walk in the park and all our runners were selected to race for the northern area at the Warwickshire Primary County Cross Country Championships. Alex Wylie secured 1st position, Amelie Brown 9th, Olivia Cox 10th, William Simmons 13th, Ben McLean 20th and Sophia Brogan 22nd. The county race was held in the sunny south of the county in Stratford-upon-Avon. Alex Wylie did amazingly well finishing in 2nd place and William Simmons 19th. Amelie, Sophia and Ben also competed. The Northern area boys secured first place and the girls second place. Well done to all the children who competed at this top level…
