Tennis Success

Having qualified for the Warwickshire School Games Tennis Finals with a comfortable win over local schools in the District Tournament, the Twycross team of Finlay Thompson-Lowe (Captain), Max Savania, Tom Adey, Joe Callery, Kristian Howe and Will Simmons travelled to Warwick University to compete in the county competition against the winners of other Warwickshire districts. It was immediately apparent as the teams warmed up that the standard of tennis was going to be far higher than it had been in the local competition with teams from large schools in Solihull and South Warwickshire looking particularly competent.

The competition of eight schools was divided into two groups with two singles matches and two doubles matches in each rubber. Twycross began in fine style winning all four matches against St Benedicts to secure maximum points and were then able to watch their next two opponents as they played each other in the next round of matches. It became apparent that Tudor Grange, our next opponents, would provide the tougher test of the remaining two group games and so it proved to be.   had had to wait an uncomfortably long time before their next match and despite being aware of the significance of the match, all the players started slowly and were soon behind in their matches. Although they tried to recover, the boys had given their opponents too much of a head start and only the doubles pair of Tom Adey and Joe Callery were able to overhaul the deficit and claim a win.

The result of the rubber was all the more disappointing given the fact that Twycross were capable of winning all three matches that they lost and that their ability to top the group was now in the hands of the team they had just beaten. The boys still had to win their last match against Whitley Academy and did so in style winning all four matches again. Unfortunately Tudor Grange won their final rubber 3-1 to top the group and send Twycross into the bronze medal match.

Against a confident team from Alcester Grammar the boys played some of their best tennis and held their nerve in a couple of very tight matches to win the rubber by winning all four matches to produce a very creditable total of thirteen wins in sixteen matches. There had been very little between the top three teams in the tournament as the final between Tudor Grange and Alderbrook finished level with the latter just shading it on points scored. An excellent performance by this team to add to the A team’s Leicestershire Team Tennis Trophy and finish off a successful season of tennis.

Under 13 Boys and Girls

Twycross House School U13 boys and girls tennis teams have enjoyed remarkable success this season with the boys winning the Leicestershire Schools Team Tennis Division 1 competition and the girls finishing runners up in their Division 1 competition.

The boys’ team of Lawrence Cockrell (capt.), Finlay Thompson-Lowe, Max Savania and Will Simmons defeated Leicester Grammar, Loughborough Grammar and Ratcliffe College on their way to the title and now progress to the regional finals in September where they will face the winners of other county competitions in the Midlands region. Each match was very close and went to a tie break shoot out but excellent doubles play and holding their nerve enabled the team to secure the win.

The girls’ team of Ellen Burton (capt.), Amelia Blunt, Ella Morris and Isabella Cockrell enjoyed notable victories against Leicester Grammar and Loughborough High but were beaten in a tie break shoot out having drawn the match against Sir John North Community College of Leicester to finish second in the division despite playing some wonderful tennis.
