History Trip to Berlin – October 23rd-25th 2017

Very early in the morning on the 23rd October students and staff boarded the coach to Luton Airport at the start of our history trip to Berlin. The trip was organised to support the new GCSE and A level courses which both focus on a study of German history, 1890-1945 and involved 30 Senior 5-upper sixth students.

The first day was very busy, and after dropping luggage off at the hotel we explored central Berlin by foot, metro and bus! We also visited the Museum of Topography of Terror and Check Point Charlie. The students were ready for a lovely meal at the Hard Rock Café and a relatively early night.

After a good breakfast we started our second day with a visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. This was a very emotional experience as it explains the history of the early days of concentration camps and how they were initially used to hold political prisoners before expanding to become a key part of the Nazi’s Final Solution policy.  It was an incredibly valuable experience for the students to see first hand what we have been learning about in class.

In the afternoon we travelled by coach to the house which was venue to the Wannsee Conference, this was where the plans were discussed for the Final Solution.

On the final morning students visited the Reichstag and got to explore the beautiful new building and learn about the Reichstag fire of 1933 and its impact on the rise to power of Hitler.

As always, the behaviour of the students was impeccable, and thanks goes to Mrs Hitchin for organising the trip and to Mr Buckton for navigating us around Berlin!
