Hardwick Hall – September 2017

On a lovely sunny morning senior 5 GCSE history students set off to visit Hardwick Hall. As part of the new AQA GCSE history course students have to study a compulsory topic as part of the “Historic Environment” element of the course ready to answer a compulsory examination question. For the current senior 5 their topic is Hardwick Hall as an example of changes in Elizabethan design and in class we have been looking at the design, architectural influences, purpose and the very interesting story of Bess of Hardwick.

Students were given a guided tour of Hardwick Hall and the gardens and were able to note down lots of interesting facts and unusual pieces of information that they will be able to incorporate into their exam answers. It was certainly extremely valuable to experience the building first hand and will definitely have added to their understanding of changes in Elizabethan society.
