Duke of Edinburgh – Volunteering case study

KatieThere has been much publicity with the community takeover of libraries as county councils across the country threaten closure in order to save money. Market Bosworth library has been such one case where a number of individuals from the community have worked together to produce business plans and meet with the council to negotiate to keep the library open and fully manned by a team of volunteers.

Katie Wells has been volunteering at the Market Bosworth Community Library for both her Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh award. Her duties include organising displays and tourist information, giving IT advice, signing up new joiners to the library, checking books in and out and cataloguing new books. Her enthusiastic work at the library has greatly impressed both the trustees and library users – so much so that she was asked to ‘cut the ribbon’ to formally open the library in December. The library is always looking for volunteers. Please see for more information.
