Arts Festival

The school was buzzing with creative endeavour during the first week in March when we held our first ever Arts Festival.  The aim was simply to celebrate the arts throughout the week in the broadest sense: drama, art, music, dance, singing, poetry, craft, stories, design.  We enlisted the services of a professional jester to teach and entertain the juniors one afternoon, but all the other activities were provided by staff and senior pupils, many of whom turned out to have unexpected talents.

Most sporting activities were suspended for the week so that the children were able to attend a number of lunchtime and after school workshops.  Members of the 6th form and S5 gave generously of their time to provide workshops in Warhammer painting, Word Slam (performance poetry), guitar playing, friendship bracelets and simple cartoons.  Light-footed teachers gave taster classes in salsa dancing, street dancing, Greek folk dancing and ballet, while in the art room framed mirrors were painted and exotic fish created.  Over in the drama studio children wrote and performed in their own silent movies.

The poetry and mini-saga competitions attracted excellent entries and the Ice a Cupcake competition on an international theme produced some stunning cakes which were simply too good to eat.

The arts theme also extended to very many lessons, with windmills, decorated plant pots, origami DNA, model seismographs, French songs, German ‘Karneval’, a paper Turing machine and home-produced computer games typical of the creative output.  Throughout the week we were entertained by buskers in odd corners of the school who raised £138.94 for the Youth Music charity.

Pupils of all ages took part with enthusiasm and were grateful for the chance to try something different and have some fun.
